Agreed. I have worked as a system adm for 2 of the other major ILS's
(which shall go unnamed). For all the whining I do (I try to keep it
targeted) Innovative is still the best system I have worked with.
I had the luxury of doing nothing but Innovative system admin, when I
first came to Canton PL. I am now a dept head but retain this
responsibility. My previous experience also suggests that the job tends
to include other "duties as required".
I had a discussion, related to this, with Corey Seeman at the first
Eastern Great Lakes IUG meeting.
The issue was/is: Where are the programs that emphasize this aspect of
librarianship?
I suppose most technically oriented people are more interested in web
design than they are on more hard cores aspects of system admin (database
management, scripting, etc., which does include the webopac). But if
there were programs that allowed students to get there hand under the
hoold of an ILS I think there would be takers.
I suppose the only way to do this would be to get students involved as
interns, in the admin of the school's ILS. SSetting up some kind of
virtual infrastructure, with another ILS product might be an option, but
the propriety nature of the business probably prohibits this.
