[IUG] Scopes in consortia
[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
At Carleton & St. Olaf (Bridge Consortium) we are wrangling with a scoping
situation for which we cannot find a good solution. For particular local
needs, we are trying to establish two separate scopes for sound recordings
at each school.
Because III will only establish scopes using either (not both) Bib Location
codes or MatTypes, we are in a deep tangle about how best to do this,
without creating a big mess of our location code structure. We cannot
create a scope using the several MatTypes we use for sound recordings in
various formats, since that does not address the issue of separate scopes
for each school.
Here are the facts:
1. Our location codes are hierarchical and organized by physical location
or collections (recommended to us by III). For example --
Carleton's main library has a media collection, bib loc=cm
Within that collection, there are 3 item locs for sound recordings in
various formats (cassettes, CDs, LPs), as well as item locs for other media
(DVDs, VHS, etc.)
Carleton also has a Music Listening Room, bib loc ml
Within that collection, there is one item loc for CDs (mlcd), as well as
item locs for books & scores
2. St. Olaf has a similar situation with item locs for sound recordings in
different libraries under the bib loc for that library. For example --
StO Music Library bib loc is oma
Within that collection, there are 4 item locs for sound recordings in
various formats, as well as item locs for books, score, etc.
The only option we see is to disrupt our logical, hierarchical location
code structure and create a new bib location at each school that includes
only the item locs for sound recordings. This change will, of course, make
it even more difficult to create lists & collect stats efficiently. We are
feeling very frustrated that the III scoping structure seems so primitive
and inflexible.
If any of you have found a creative way to deal with a similar situation,
we would love to hear from you. Thanks.
