API and WAM are two different modules. The WAM module is the internal
iii function used to authenticate patrons using external databases or
resources. API is a module used to generate a patron list so that it
can be used externally. For example, we have chosen to use an external
program to authenticate patrons, but have chosen to use API to generate
the patron list for the external program to authenticate against.
This is the way that iii describes API:
Millennium's Patron API allows the library to offer complete patron
information to an external system for such uses as an access gate or
"one card" system to provide data for patron verification by another
database. The API is straightforward and may be tested using a standard
Web browser, streamlining external application development. The Patron
API provides structured HTML output of all patron-record data for
external processing.

Thanks for all of the advice. It has been very helpful. Can someone
clarify the difference between API and WAM for me?

Sorry for the non-specific answer but from your post this appears to be
a great time to call Innovative directly and request a visit to your
site by an Innovative representative. The person is usually a sales
representative, but it's not pressure sales at all.
The sales reps are fairly well rounded product specialists. They will
certainly be able to itemize for you what products you already have and
then, based on the needs and directions of your library, they will work
to provide you with the products you need.
Then you can turn back to this very helpful list to learn the tips and
tricks of using those products or picking and choosing which might work
best.
To answer your question about authentication against the III database,
the answer is usually III's Patron API product.

Subject: [IUG] Database authentication question
Can anyone tell me which Innovative components I would need to use to
successfully authenticate our students against our Innovative Millennium
Silver library database? Our system, which was purchased five years
ago, is
a bare-bones model, and was purchased with only the basics. Apparently
the
previous director decided to accept a stripped down version of
Innovative
rather than a full version of another product because of cost. I am
trying
to find out which additional items I may need to purchase from
Innovative to
best address the remote access problem. We would like to allow access to
services such as research databases without using cumbersome passwords.
As a new director with a system that is less than what I expected, I
would
appreciate your advice about the best way to proceed. It is critical for
us
at this time, as our Gulf Coast students could really benefit from
remote
services like electronic databases and e-books while we are rebuilding
the
library there. I would also appreciate any comments about which e-book
vendors have products that interface well with the Millennium Silver
product.
Thanks,
