RE: [IUG] web catalog renewals and adding them to monthly circulation
[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
Hello,
It would be nice if III could come up with a way to add a renewal statistic
to the statistics group located in the OUT LOC field so that the originating
checkout library would get the credit from online or TRS transactions. This
would solve a lot of problems trying to calculate which library gets credit
for what transactions. Sounds logical to me.
I think I submitted this as an enhancement, but nothing came of it.
Thanks,

Good day, all
I was most intrigued to see this discussion arise. We also want to know how
other libraries report patron renewals from "home" (from outside a library).
We posed this question a year ago to our State Library in preparation for
annual reports, and it has no final resolution as yet. (I believe the
statistical guru at Oregon State Library is carrying the issue forward to
committees at the regional and national level; evidently this had not been
dealt with before? )
Here is what we will do this year, in consultation with our State Library:
Where we are reporting circulation activity based upon an item's OWNERSHIP,
all renewals, including those a patron performs from home, are included in
that figure. (that one's easy)
Where we are reporting total circulation based on the LOCATION of the
TRANSACTION ('total circulation' is so defined in our State Library report,
and renewals are specifically detailed to be included in that total) we
apportion patron self-renewals from home based upon each library's share of
the system total of 'inside' activity, and add that number to the total of
the library's 'inside' transactions.
Where we are reporting INTRASYSTEM loans -- items routed from the owning
library for delivery to patrons at another library within our III system --
it's a report based upon ownership, and patron renewals from home are
included in the total: in effect, the 'cloud' becomes another member library
in our system.
I could generate reports of patron renewals from home according to item
ownership, or according to another patron record fixed field (home library,
Pcodes 1, 2 and 3). But home library is unreliable unless you are scrupulous
about maintaining it -- and we are not; we have not created a scheme of
Pcodes for this purpose; and the State Library was less inclined to have the
figure divided up by ownership than divided up to reflect our various shares
of total in-library activity.
Note: Our structure and our reports may differ from what others require. We
are a consortium of individual libraries sharing a III system, a parliament
of equals, not a main and branches. However, our patrons have equal
privileges at all member libraries, and we freely route items for holds.
YMMV.

Hi Sharon,
We include patron renewals from home in our monthly statistical report--we
count them as checkouts. Hope this helps.

I've got a quick question about what other Innovative libraries count for
monthly circulation totals. We've not been counting renewals from the Web
Catalog in our monthly circulation and are wondering what other Innovative
libraries are doing.
What are you doing with the renewal totals from the web catalog? Not the
totals from the public computers in your libraries, but the totals from
renewals that customers place from their personal computers from home.
