RE: [IUG] New title stats when in a consortium (clarified)

This might work for you.

Use an ICODE to code for new volumes or bibs. Use a location code or
code a note for the owning library. This would give you the ability to
create lists based on the "new addition" coding while separating by
library. Once the statistics are collected, you rapid update the ICODE
to something that will not be captured in the next run and empty your
review file(s).

Subject: [IUG] New title stats when in a consortium (clarified)

I'm send this query again. I've received some responses (TYVM), but
from them I realized that I hadn't been specific enough in my original
request.

We are trying to get a count of "new titles" added to (cataloged in) our
collections in the last year. Volumes & items added in a particular
time period are easy. It's the bibs/titles that are eluding us.

Some background:
-We use hierarchical codes in both bib and item. It is easy to identify
which library and which collection a title and item are in.
-Until 2004, we were a single library.
-In 2004, we formed a consortium with St. Olaf College and now shared a
III system (single database). We also share bib records.
-We have separate accounting units, but do not create order records for
the many gifts we add to the collection.
-We have used III for 9 years (16 for me) and are experienced in
creating lists and running statistical reports.

Two examples of the issues we are struggling with:

1. In our situation, a new item record does not always mean a new
title.
e.g. New items added to serials like Annual review of psychology.
Definitely a new volume. But not a new title. Ditto a second copy.

2. On the other hand, attaching a new item record to a pre-existing
bib/title *can* sometimes mean a new title. e.g. Lib#2 adds an item to
a bib/title previously held only by Lib#1. This does need to be counted
as a new title for Lib#2.

I'm on the verge of deciding that we should just count titles in the
database -- for the whole consortium -- and track volumes/copies for
each school. At present, that won't work for some of our reporting
needs, but it's starting to make sense to me, particularly since we are
moving toward a collection development model that looks at our
consortium as "two collections that function as one."

Thanks for any help, insights or experiences you can offer.

~Carol
