Like many libraries we use one of the Internal Use fields in the item record to mark those items which need to be edited en masse via a review file.
Here's how described by Leo O'Neill.
It may not be as quick as the method you used to use but you can also do other things based on the review file, e.g. count how many items have been scanned, find items which are marked missing, etc.
