[IUG] bounced emails
[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
For those of you interested:
I ended up calling III about this. I Probably should've done that first. As I guessed from my research, they ended up creating/editing a .forward file in the /iiidb/users/circadm directory. The "." signifies a hidden file, so you will only be able to see it by keying in ls -al instead of just ls or ls -l
I learned a great deal about sendmail in my search for a better way. III may have also made other changes I am unaware of, so if you would like to do something like this, I suggest you have them do it and then if you need to, you can edit the file later or have them do that too.
The .forward file is a simple text file which consists of the email address you want the mail to go to. Also there is no cleanup in Innopac to do either, just as Carolyn states. The beauty of this is that I no longer have to deal with any bounced emails (I work in IT); instead they go directly to the person who edits the patron's account and/or prints and sends the notice by mail.
Now we use Groupwise here. So what I did for this person was help her create a folder and a rule to move the bounced emails into this folder and after opening, then automatically delete them 7 days later so she doesn't have to clean up after herself. I also instructed her on how to share this folder with other staff members, so on her day off, vacation, etc. SHE doesn't have to deal with them either.
You could also just add another email address to the .forward file below the first address. Everyone who is in the .forward file gets a copy...like CC. So if you wanted to do that, your file would look like so:
staffmember1 at institution dot org
staffmember2 at institution dot org
There are times when I dread calling III, but this was not one of them. With III's help, I was able to completely annihilate one task that was consuming 5-10 minutes of my time, twice a day. I wrote a script that saved me the keyboard strokes and the mouse clicks, but since it relied on window focus, I couldn't do anything else with my PC until it was done...and I had to remember to run it in the first place. The upside....I was sure cleaning the cobwebs out of my basic unix/linux skills cabinet.
If I were at McDonalds....man, I'd be singing, "I'm Loving it!"
Thanks for all your helpful suggestions and advice and good luck in all your endeavors.

Carolyn! This is exactly what we want to do!
Can you tell me the steps to accomplish this or point me in the right
direction?

Hi,
One way is to set your innopac machine to forward any bounced messages
directly to another mailbox, such as the mailbox of your staff member.
We set this up quite easily in UNIX (as a software only site), and it
has been great - we never get any emails into innopac at all.
Regards
Carolyn

Subject: [IUG] bounced emails
Has anyone come up with a way to deal with bounced emails in an
expedient manner?
Everyday, we're going into Innopac, selecting each bounced email and
sending it via email to the appropriate staff member to be dealt with.
You can't even select a range of them. You can copy them to a file.
If
you view saved mail, you can see the file. But when I then choose the
send option, it doesn't send the file or give an option to attach the
file, just create a new email. And I couldn't find the file (if
that's
what it is) on the system either.
Ideally, I would like to batch all of these and send them via email in
one fell swoop to one staff member rather than 30-50 individual
sendings
per day. Any ideas from the gurus?
Thanks,
Rach
