[IUG] How long to use backup tapes?

Does anyone have a policy on how many times a backup tape can be reused?  We
write down the date of the backup on the tape box and some of our tapes have
over 25 dates on them.  We keep 12 tapes in offsite storage at any one time.
These are put back into rotation as new tapes are brought over to storage.
The weather here is very humid which may be a consideration.  

Any feedback would be appreciated.
