RE: [IUG] Cover Art from Amazon

Hi Alan,

We are not an Amazon associate. I first registered for a free account
for web services, read the agreement, and set up our links. I then
requested permission, pointing out that we offered users a link to the
Amazon site. About a week later I received an e-mail response stating
that we appear to be in compliance but to check periodically for updates
and changes to the agreement.

It may be a different situation in Britain since Amazon has a separate
UK site and I believe it is managed locally with its own personnel and
policies. Although I've purchased materials from the UK site we use only
the US site for linking to images.

Best,
Mark

Mark,

I saw this with interest, and had a look at the Amazon web site. There
does seem to be a bit about web services under the associates section.
Do you have to be an associate to access their book covers?

Hi Deb,

We display book jacket images from Amazon in our WebOPAC and in the
Millennium staff modules.

I asked and received permission from Amazon before proceeding. Under the
terms of their Web Services agreement a link to Amazon must be included
on our pages. We do this with a link in our WebBridge bib panel. There
were no other stipulations imposed by Amazon when granting permission
other than a caveat to keep checking the usage page periodically as the
rules are subject to change at any time.

We initially did this as an experiment after the decision was made not
to purchase Syndetics. If Amazon were to change their policy or begin
charging (which they might do if enough libraries begin using them as a
source for images) I expect we would be willing to pay for them either
from Amazon or another vendor. They do brighten up the catalog and are
well received by patrons.

You need to add the following BIBIMAGE wwwoption:

BIBIMAGE=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/%s.01.00TLZZZZ|i|http://www.a
mazon.com/gp/product/images/%s/ref=dp_primary-product-display_0/?
target="window"

Right now clicking the jacket image in the WebOPAC brings up a larger
image which does nothing else. When I get a chance I'm going to try to
modify the code so that users will be able to link to Amazon directly
from the image.

I also use Amazon to display jacket images in the staff modules. If you
have WebBridge this is done by adding a book jacket resource definition
with the URL http://images.amazon.com/images/P/# at ISBN# dot 01 dot 00TLZZZZ

Hi,

At IUG Denver several people mentioned that we could get cover art from
Amazon at no charge. Is anyone doing this? And if so, how did you
acquire the cover art? Where there any stipulations with Amazon?

Thanks
Deb Bergeron
