FYI. We use a different technique to achieve similar results by using
javascript dynamically add content based on the value of a field -- ie.
Matching content based on an ISBN #. One added benefit is that we don't
have to necessarily modify each of the catalog records.

See:
http://tripod.brynmawr.edu/record=b2654429

(we use this to place the syndetics content on the right of the page with
the first chapter link).

First of all, thanks to Mike for the mention and his efforts to spread
the word about this. It's a technique that I worked out just over a year
ago, and I've been trying to spread the word by presentations and in a
posting on the IUG Clearinghouse that describes it all in torturous
detail ("Using TOC to create chapter-level access to e-books" Record#83
in the Clearinghouse). But Mike is exactly right that most people aren't
aware of the possibilities.

We've added these maps to nearly every record in the Reference
collection - to see an example, go to:

http://qcat.quinnipiac.edu/search/t?SEARCH=encyclopedia+of+american+fact
s&searchscope=8

By the time we'd broadened the work for images such as this, it occurred
to us that the possibilities to use this are only bounded by one's
imagination. I'm particularly gratified to see Mike's example to get our
first look at other imaginations at work.

I'm posting this message to the list because I don't think many of us
are aware of the ability to do this. I cannot take credit for
discovering this...I saw it in Quinnipiac University's opac
(http://qcat.quinnipiac.edu/) where they were using this strategy to
display location maps on particular bib record pages. The strategy is to

use a 970 marc field (local table of contents) to display arbitrary html

on the record display page. For an example in our catalogue, please see:

http://www.cambridgelibraries.ca/3dayroad.cfm

where we have used an iframe to embed a related booklist.

I think this opens up all kinds of possibilities for customizing the
opac. And please don't complain that this is an abuse of cataloguing
standards...I'm not a cataloguer anymore! ;)
