Janice,
I do not know why the old version needs to stay. I thought the recovery
tape would do the trick in case the upgrade went south.
I also heard some unsettling news or rumor that 2007 would require 3 GB
ram. I just bought a new server with 1 GB. Needlessly to say, it cost
an arm and leg to upgrade the memory from 512 to 1 GB.

Subject: [IUG] Release upgrades and server space
I have a question about upgrades and server space: does each upgrade
permanently use up space on the software disk partition; or does the
next upgrade write over it, so to speak?
For instance, we have two 18G disks on a Dec Alpha with 29G
available. We are planning on upgrading from Silver to 2005.
Apparently we can increase the partition to 16G, providing the 12G
needed for 2005. That leaves 4G, which we were told would not be
adequate for the upcoming 2006 release (12G needed). But possibly we
could repartition to use up some 13G from our "big zero".
Does this mean that the 12G needed for 2005 can't be "reused" for
2006? What is the "big zero" and what are the criteria for how large
this should be?
Thanks for your insight -- Janice Woo @ CCA
p.s. we purchased our Alpha in 2003 and are a bit perturbed that
Release 2007 leaves us out in the cold
