RE: [IUG] Enhanced 505s

I think that English initial articles are automatically ignored in title searches involving the 505 field, in Innovative, that is. I think that LC practice is to not transcribe initial articles in 505s.

If more controlled access is desired, why not do 700 $t instead of (as well as) 505? Also, do you use $g to account for non-filing characters in the 505?
(i.e.: "$g Ch. 1. The $t title is this")

Subject: [IUG] Enhanced 505's
Good morning everyone--
We have students inputting and/or enhancing 505 contents fields for Festschriften and similar multiple author items. Author access, and even title access, is very limited what with the direct order of the author's entry, the lack of authority control, and no non-filing indicators for tht title. Nevertheless, this info isn't available anywhere else (indexes, etc.) from what I'm told by my reference colleagues, so even this limited access is important.
Has anyone tried to extract information from these subfields to produce a more useable product (tagged database, etc.)?
I'd love to hear about both successes and failures.
Thanks
Elisheva
