Hi all,
I have been looking into enabling the holds request feature on our OPAC
(we're running 2005LE). Our catalog is shared by several university
libraries, but one is a joint-use facility that also serves the registered
county public.
Circulating items can be checked out to academic patrons of the university,
public patrons are only allowed to check out items owned by the joint-use
library.
We would only allow holds to be placed on items that are currently checked
out, as follows:
1- An Academic patron should be able to request a hold on any of the items,
regardless of the library that owns it.
2- A public patron should ONLY be able to request a hold on copies owned by
the Sherman Library location (because that's the joint-use library they are
allowed to check out items from).
3- A distance student SHOULD NOT be able to put a hold on any OPAC items. We
have a dedicated department just for the distance patrons.
4- A visitor, or non-registered user (that is, not an academic or registered
public patron) SHOULD NOT see the option to request a hold.
* this last one is not as important, because obviously if they don't have a
patron record they'll just hit a dead wall (...right?)
I found a few similar type postings on the list archives, but none really
seemed to apply to our specific case. Then there's all the manual and
listserv distinctions between bib level vs. item level holds, pickup
locations, request circles, etc. I'm not yet sure I grasp all of the
combinations of factors that go into this. Many of these different factors
fall in the area of the Circulation and Systems departments.
Any advice? Thanks in advance!!
