RE: [IUG] patrons deny setting foot in library

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
Don't leave out when members of the same household walk in with each
others' cards (and don't tell each other about it), or when people lose
their cards, don't tell us, and the card finder decides to come in and
have a field day (though that's less common).

The most common error I've seen, aside from patrons forgetting they'd
been here, is when checkout staff forget to close out of the previous
patron's record (if they were handing out the due date receipts with
diligence, they would not make this mistake, but that topic is for
another day) and end up checking out the next person's items on the
previous person's account. That's not to say we see this a lot, it's
just one of the more common mistakes with this kind of situation. Of
course, some patrons are also known to just outright lie about these
things, as others have pointed out.

See, this whole thread highlights a good reason for everyone to go
biometric--it's hard to argue that someome else at the same library
happens to have the same fingerprint as someone else and checked items
out on the other person's account!

;)

--Will (I'm only half-joking about this, BTW... Biometrics would solve
this problem; Millennium can store patron pictures, so why not a
fingerprint? Anyway...)

We are running Release 2005 1.2. If we scan book barcodes without first
scanning a patron barcode, we are prompted with an error pop-up that
tells the user "You have not scanned in a borrower barcode yet". The
only choice is "OK" and the system waits for you to scan or enter a
valid patron barcode. So in our case, either it's user error, or the
patron is telling a whopper.

Occasionally when we send
out overdue notices a patron will deny ever being in the library, much
less checking out a book. We believe they are telling the truth (at
least some of them). Needless to say, the circulation librarians are
looking to me for an explanation/solution. How might this situation
occur? There was a thread about this a while back which was helpful,
but I'm hoping there are others who have experienced this that can
help
as well. I could not reproduce the scenario described in the previous
thread.
