- Subject: [IUG] Progress resolving RE: Dell network printer
Hello Gayle --
I am happy to post an update on our progress, but we are not
out-of-the-woods resolving all of the issues.
The replies that I had gotten from several IUG folks gave me the
encouragement to press forward with our City MIS folks to try to get the
Dell working. Clearly several other III libraries were using the Dell
3000 printer successfully, even though it is not on III's list of
supported network printers, and III Helpdesk would therefore not help
with it. In digging further with the City MIS folks, I came to learn
that they had a jet-direct box on the configuration. We use this printer
for both the "public" network of public use pc's as well as the "staff
network" with the Millenium workstations. The jet-direct I believe was
being used so that the parallel printer port could be seen as a network
port. To resolve the problem of Millenium having problems printing
through this jet-direct box, we swapped ports in the configuration, so
that now the Millenium staff workstations are printing directly to the
network port on the printer, and the public pc's are printing to the
jet-direct/parallel port.
I hope that I explained clearly enough what we have tried so far. The
City MIS guys are great, but it always leaves me with a challenge to
understand clearly enough the network config that they maintain, as I do
not "get my hands dirty" with any of the network support. They are
dashing so quickly doing their work, that we rarely talk long enough for
me to learn what they've done. I usually end up learning things as a
result of troubleshooting, rather than pro-actively in advance of
problems. Know what I mean?
We now can print successfully, but are not satisfied with the formatting
of some of the Millenium "standard printer" documents such as printing
from the item record. The formatting is terrible - like what else is
new? I haven't tweaked some of the other settings to see if we can get
a better formatting for some of these documents.
I hope that this helps. Best wishes with it.
Paul

Paul,
On the IUG listserv recently you mentioned problems your library was
having getting a new Dell printer to work with Millennium. Were you
able to resolve it satisfactorily? If so, could you share with me how
you did it?
One of our consortium's member libraries called me today to say they
have a new Dell 3000cn printer that they've installed as a network
printer, and of course we are having trouble getting it to work with
Millennium.
Thanks,
Gayle
