Just before the holidays I got this great idea. I've sent this letter to
6-8 icon designers that I found seaching google. I have gotten several
positive replies which I will also send to this list so other can pursue
them if you like. I will keep this list posted on our progress.

*Subject:* Statement of work for a proposed job in creating library
material-type icons for WNCLN

Western North Carolina Library Network is a consortium of 3 university
libraries in the western part of North Carolina in the USA. These libraries
share a library system called Innopac at
*http://wncln.wncln.org/*<http://wncln.wncln.org/>.
This software is used by hundreds of libraries all over the world as their
access to the collections they hold. In the big scheme of things, libraries
in general are not very rich. They tend to share things in order to save
money and provide the best service to our users. Over the years, several
individuals and the company that owns Innopac have made various attempts to
create a general set of icons for use in this software and offered to share
them with the other libraries. Currently there are several sets out there. *
http://www.nova.edu/library/mayz/iug_icons.html*<http://www.nova.edu/library/mayz/iug_icons.html>and
*http://iii.camden.lib.nj.us/screens/graphics.htm*<http://iii.camden.lib.nj.us/screens/graphics.htm>
are some examples of what some libraries have created and shared.

WNCLN has looked over these sets but they don't have the complete list of
material types we have in our library system. We would still have to create
many of the missing icons ourselves or find ones that might fit the scheme.
However after doing my own search, I have found that in general, there is
just not much out there freely available to libraries that fit this task.
And anything we might find will not match a set of icons we have.

However, what I did find was many companies and artists that specialize in
creating icons. Many of these companies/artists do custom work. You have
been contacted because I found your website in my searching for free icons
that describe library material-types.

Here is what I'm interested in finding out from you.

1) In the spirit of cooperation and sharing with which libraries
fundamentally operate, we are interested in having you creating a set of
icons that can be freely used by any library in the world for the purpose of
describing material-types in their library system. If a library in the
future needs a material type not already created in our set, we will refer
them to you to create another in this set. You will charge for creating new
or modifying icons. Are you willing to create icons with this copyright
provision? (Libraries can freely use and share this set of material-type
icons.)

2) Libraries also work internally with committees to make decisions. The
chair of one or two of these committees will be the major contact with you
as you create this set of icons for us. However, committee work can be
slow. We have several groups of folks involved that must be consulted. Are
you willing to work at a slow pace with us?

3) Here is the initial list of material types that I think we need to
create. The letters are our internal one letter code and will need to be
part of the name given to each file. The icon will need the text in it as
well as an image(s) of the material type(s). In looking at the examples on
the websites above, you will see that some icons are a collection of several
images. We may be combining icons (for example, film and filmstrip are both
projected media). The interested committees might want to combine these
into one image once we see preview your icons or change the text on the
icon. This list is to give you an idea of the scope of the project and the
number of icons needed, at least initially for this proposal.

We recommend that you do a search in our library system at *
http://wncln.wncln.org* <http://wncln.wncln.org/> to look at the icons we
currently have in use. We want to give our catalog a more up-to-date,
attractive, college kid friendly look while still making sure the meaning is
clear and easy to understand.

If you agree to the above (especially the copyright provision), please send
me the following which I will forward to our committees for consideration.
I will be getting back to you after our break. (We have vacation until
January 2nd.) It might take me a while to get with the committees and work
on the financing for this project.

1) An example of a few of your icons so we can see an example of your work.
An example that included the book material-type would be preferred.

2) Your pricing structure. We prefer cost per icon.

3) Your full address and billing information.

Thank you for your interest. I am excited about this project and really
look forward to hearing from you.
