Kwan,
I had several fixed date loan rules at my previous place of employment.
I changed the dates on the existing loan rules for all of them at least
once a year. You have to be careful and do some calculating or serious
thinking about how and when to do this. If the rule allows renewals,
make the change to just the renewal date if they are supposed to be able
to renew to the new due date, but books currently being checked out
still get the "old" due date. (it is much simpler for those rules with
no renewals allowed). If you need to set the new date and the absolute
date would make it fall within the current year rather than the next one
(say if you have a 1 year loan rule and allow renewals immediately or
really far ahead of the due date), just add 365 (366 if this year is a
leap year) to the absolute date for next year and all will be well. I
can't emphasize enough that you have to carefully figure the due date
and renewal date in relationship to the current absolute value date.
And remember you can always add a year to the date. But then you need
to go back and subtract it once you pass it if either year is a leap
year. (If neither year is a leap year, having a due date of 159 is the
same as having a due date of 365+159 or 424 right up until you hit day
160 in the current year).
It's good practice to go in and double check them all periodically for
things like this. How often will depend on the length of your loan
rules and how close to the due date they have to be before you are able
to renew.
It won't change the due date on anything that is currently checked out.
That date is in the item record, so it can't change. But if you want
them to pick up the new due date as a renewal date *before* you are
using it as the current due date it can be done. Just be thoughtful.
(have I emphasized it too much? Not really--it is important.)
If this is still confusing, feel free to write me directly or give me a
call. Loan rules are frequent causes of big headaches.
