Thank you to Carol, Jeff and others that responded to our question about
using Dell printers as system printers on III with the "printer type" as
HPII. Your replies gave me confidence to go back to our City MIS guys
and say that it should not be the manufacturer/model of printer that was
the problem.

Long story - very much shorter, is our MIS guys hooked up our Dell
printer on our "staff side" of the network using a jet direct box. When
we print to other Dell printers at other locations around the City
network that do not have the jet direct box, it prints fine. So now
they are working backwards on trying to achieve their networking goals
for this printer, without the jetdirect box.

Funny one, in a cynical kinda way. When I brought to MIS the statement
from the III Helpdesk that was also in the User manual, that III
provides and supports HP4000 and HP4050 printers for system printing,
the MIS reply was: "Does your vendor know that HP no longer makes these
printers?"

So, we are not yet printing, but we think that MIS understands the
problem. I call that progress ! !

Thanks gang, and Happy Holidays.

Paul

We too have a Dell 1700n (a rebadged lexmark printer) and have had no
problems printing to it, we used the same millennium settings that were
used for the HP Laserjet printer that was previously attached.

Paul,

I have a Dell 1700n laser printer in my office. I print to it often
through Millennium, Standard Printer. I've never had any problems with
it. In printer setup on the III server, I specified Printer Type=hpii.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Honest to goodness gang - it seems like printer woes just never stop.

Our recent skirmish is that the "system printer" that we had in our
Children's Department finally bit the dust. It was an aging HP laser,
and when we migrated to III it installed on III just fine, so we kept
using it as a reliable workhorse. The printer was located on the staff
desk, and whenever staff or users (children) at the public PCs printed,
it all went to the same network printer. A very cost effective solution
for a relatively low volume area.

So, the old HP bites the dust, and the City MIS guys (that btw do a
great job supporting our hardware) install the replacement printer using
the manufacturer/model that they are now using all around the City.
The
problem is it is a Dell laser printer. We now come to learn that III
only supports HP 4000 or 4050 as system network printers (or Okidata as
serial). Nobody in MIS asked us if this was going to be a problem, but
they sure as heck do not want to install other than their current
favorite printer.

My question for you'all is: Have you had success getting network
printers other than HP manufacturer to install and run from Millenium as
a "standard printer". Specifically have you had success with Dell 3100cn
?

We appreciate any advice (other than the obvious of telling City MIS to
take the $%^& thing away).

Thanks, and Happy Holidays

Paul
