We are a library which uses multiple call number schemes. During
migration, the Innovative staff recommended that we put our call numbers
in the item records and index those instead of indexing the bib call
number fields. We leave the 050, 090 and other recommended call numbers
in the bib record, but the fields are "y" tagged (misc field, not
indexed). This has been a successful approach for us.
We have 2 call number indexes built from the item records: one for LC
classified materials (c tag), and a "local" call number index (e tag)
which includes Dewey Decimal and our various other local classification
numbers (archival items, educational curriculum, etc). Our call numbers
in the item records are designated either as MARC 090 or MARC 099 fields.
I use Create List to find call numbers by specifying the MARC tag so that
I can only get the LC numbers, or only the Dewey or local numbers, etc.
Our local numbers are sufficiently different from Dewey that I can specify
which I want by using "starts with." I also use Create List to find call
numbers in the item records which staff forgot to code as MARC fields, so
that we can fix the problem, although the item templates also help with
this problem. I strongly recommend that you consider making your item
record call numbers into MARC fields so that you can retrieve reports from
Create Lists.
We considered the option of indexing the call numbers from the bib unless
we had multi bib locations, but decided against it. Innovative said it
might be more confusing to staff, more difficult to get reports, and might
also skew some of the statistics. I am also still struggling with some of
the display issues, but at least I can get the reports we need and our
staff know how to code the call numbers.
I don't have any information concerning how much effort it would be to
change your database. Our decisions were made as part of our migration
process from another vendor's product, and therefore were a part of our
full migration. So it would not be the same type of procedure and would
probably take less time.
I suspect that your load tables and your indexing profile might need to be
changed if you want to retain the call number fields in the bib but want
them to be "y" tagged...

Sue Whitehead, Systems Librarian/Archivist
