- Subject: [IUG] OPAC settings for Initial articles
I am appealing to the collective wisdom of the group. We have always
had the system set to ignore initial articles when performing a title
search in the OPAC. However, this has always been an issue
(particularly with our children's literature) for titles where "A"
stands for the first letter of the alphabet and not an article ("A Apple
Pie" or "A is for Amber"). We have a workaround of adding a 246 varying
title to the record which improves retrieval. One downside to this is
that the browse screen displays as "Apple Pie" instead of "A Apple Pie."
We do have the 245 filing indicator set to 0 in the bib record, but the
initial A is still ignored when we perform a title search. We wondered
whether anyone has a better solution.
