Re: [IUG] RE: Changing Loan Rules

But does the system warn you when you try to delete a loan rule? (I thought I'd ask, rather than randomly test this one myself!)

It's good for trainers to tell people this when they convert to III, and it's good to have this in the manual. But five years later, who is going to remember what the trainer said, especially with staff changes? And it's not unreasonable for people to think that an obsolete loan rule could simply be deleted, so I can see someone doing this without thinking to check the manual. This kind of thing definitely needs to have a warning message built in.

Hello folks,
Re changing loan rules... we got that message BIGTIME in training. Maybe it
is a trainer issue?
See Circulation Parameters: What You Need to Know Before You Make Changes in
csdirect, or specifically #102615 "Notes on Changing Loan Rules" in the
manual.

Sandra -- As a former trainer, we used to drill people on this concept of
not deleting the loan rules (but changing them to blank as was suggested by
Betty Dong. I was really surprised that I did not find information about
deleting loan rules in the manual or maybe I missed them also. I did find
the main page about Circ Parameters in the manual (Page # 105401) had some
really good information on how the different files are read (bottom to top
or top to bottom) and the different wildcards used on each different form.

Maybe the Checklists (which are at the back of the INNOPAC manual at page
#103185) could include the things NEVER to do along with the things to do
daily and weekly.

NEVER delete a loan rule that is not at the end of the list.

NEVER let administrators "play" with Delete Records of Any Kind

NEVER delete codes without checking if they are used in records.

NEVER drink and drive

You get the idea.

CSDirect has a web form that you can use to identify errors and submit
enhancements to the documentation (including the manual, CSDirect, etc.)

You need your CSDirect Password:
http://csdirect.iii.com/documentation/docRequest.php

They really do want to hear from us to help improve the documentation.

I remember learning it during implementation. I checked the current
documentation, and although there are notes warning about changing a loan
rule when it is in operation, I didn't find anything about not deleting it,
or about not inserting a new rule. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place,
but this is the sort of thing that should be prominently displayed in the
manual.

Wow! Thanks to all for the replies! We won't delete any loan rules in our
table! Now I'm curious to know - did folks learn this by example and why
couldn't I find a huge note in the documentation? Did I miss it?

Better yet, learn from our mistakes and name the empty loan rules "DO NOT
DELETE".

Do not delete any loan rules from your table. It will move all loan rules
following this one up by one. In your example, your 21 will be your new 20,
22 becomes 21, 23 becomes 22, etc.

What would be best is to rename the loan rule you will not be using. We
renamed ours to say "---void" but it could just be "---" or probably even
just <blank>.

I have found it this useful when I've needed to add related loan rules and
I've reused "voided" loan rules. The only other issue is to be sure that the
loan rule you want to decommission is not being used by any items still
checked out. There are many ways to ensure this.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [IUG] Loan Rules table

We are in the process of updating our loan rules and I have a question that
I cannot seem to find an answer for in the documentation.

Let's say I have 25 loan rules defined in my loan rule table. If I delete a
loan rule from the table, say, #20, will the table have a blank loan rule,
or will it renumber the rules that have been added after, for example,
making #21 the new #20?

Thanks for any information....!
