Corey, I don't know why 84 is the magic number for boxes (tho your
suggestions are certainly good ones). I do know that for a long time the
magic number was 56 and increasing to 84 was such a big improvement.
We have been using the system for serials check in for over 18 years and
really don't find it too limiting. We routinely delete boxes and add new
ones as needed and only archive cards if there are weird claiming issues
that we need to retain to resolve problems.
Mileage will vary, of course.
Anne

I am not sure if this is something that has been asked for in previous enhancement cycles, but it appears to be pretty well set. Since the checkin cards are designed to manage serials before they are bound or otherwise added to the holdings statements, it is possibly only a few titles where there would be a need for more than 84 (based on my thinking). However, just sitting here, I could see a reason why many people would like more than 84 boxes. Some systems give (in this area) more flexibility.
To set the record straight, I would like to offer what I believe are invalid reasons for the limit of 84 boxes per card:
1. In tribute to 84 Lumber
2. Respect and admiration for the '84 World Champion Detroit Tigers
3. A connection with Psalms 84 (maybe the "tents of wickedness" in line 10
4. For for the Danbury Public Library near Rt. 84.
5. Polonium, a chemical element with the symbol Po and atomic number 84.
I hope some of this was useful.

Does anyone know why Millennium allows only 84 check-in boxes per card,
and if this can be expanded without archiving the previous card?
Thanks,
