RE: Recommendations for Purchase
[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
Hi Corey,
I'll check - the thing is, we have like 17 selectors and they don't access the list, one person does and then sends it off to the appropriate selector. The selector never actually sees the recommended list, and I think it would be a nightmare to try to match up the actual orders with the list on the backend (we get 450-600 requests every month), maybe 1/4 of which are actually purchased.
I did get a great idea from someone about skipping Innovative entirely and using our own input form that retains all the info (we ask the customer to type it, it's beyond me why it doesn't show up when the request is viewed).
Since we don't need Innovative at this point, given our workflow, this might be our best answer.
Thanks for responding!
Carolyn

Carolyn --
You can place a hold on the title at the point when you acquire the item from the Recommended List. I am not sure that you are using that function. Even though it does not show you the patron information, you do get a check box that allows you to notify and/or place a hold when the item is selected. This way, you do not need to know anything about the patron. If they are blocked, it will not let you place the hold unless you have authorization 98 checked.
Are you not seeing that option? Processing Recommendations is documented in the manual at Page # 100820. Adding a hold for a new item is possible when you are acquiring recommended titles, Page # 101054
I am not sure if this matches your workflow as it currently stands, but finding a way to incorporate this into the processing of new book orders would make things very smooth. If you do not see this option display, it might be a setting that I am not familiar with.
So depending on who keys the record, you can have a single person or multiple people processing the incoming recommendation and placing holds as they do so.
Does this help?

Subject: Recommendations for Purchase
Hi,
Sacramento Public Library makes full use of the "Suggest a library
purchase" for library users to suggest titles.
Because we have multiple selectors, one person in our collection
development department accesses them through Milacq, and forwards the
suggestions to the appropriate selectors, along with patron barcode
information (if we order the title, we also put that customer first in
the hold queue).
The problem is, there is no good link between the "request a purchase"
list and the patron record, even though they type their barcode in the
input form. Milacq shows the patron name, and a rightclick for
"detailed information" shows more about the request, but nothing shows
the customer barcode. As a result, the staff member prints the list,
goes into milcirc and looks for a barcode for each customer (and
sometimes it's a guess).
Does anyone else perform this customer service to the extent we do?
Have you figured out anything to take away the "double work" aspect of
it?
I did check with Innovative & they agree it's a problem, because
specific info only shows up on selectors, but it's not practical to make
the entire patron database into selectors. It really IS the way this
service should work.
We also send feedback if we do not purchase the title - selectors have a
list of 10 or so reasons and either an e-mail or letter is sent saying
why we chose not to pick up the title.
Any ideas for making this less labor-intensive at any step of the way
would be VERY much appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Carolyn,
I'm sorry to be so late in answering this. I finally fired up an
Acquisitions session to take a look at this and I do see what you mean.
It appears that the only access to a patron record is going to be if you
make them selectors. However, since these seem to be pretty much random
patrons, this doesn't seem like a reasonable option.
I am going to suggest that you take this one to the listserve. I can see
that this is an awkward way of working, but it appears to be the way
that it is designed. Why don't you put a question out to the users to
ask if anyone has any clever workflows for this. I will tell you that in
my experience with public libraries, your patrons are far more active
than most in using this functionality, so it would certainly be nice to
have it go a step or two farther.
hope this is a little bit useful,
Georgia

Hi Georgia,
This is what it looks like when we choose "recommend" in MilAcq
to see what titles customers have recommended for purchase .
Yesterday, you said there must be a tab we aren't seeing, (we're having
to do name searches in MilCirc to find the customer's barcode) but this
is all there is - and expanding a column doesn't bring up any more
information.
If we right click on a line & choose "view detailed
recommendation" we get a lot more info about the author/title & where
this person heard about the title, but, although there is a second tab
that says "selector" it is greyed out & remains so - although there is a
statement in the lower right corner of the screen that says "loading
selector", it never does.
Is there something that is not turned on that needs to be????
Thanks!
