I've recently received some conflicting information about the 3M
V-Series SelfCheck machines, and their functionality with magnetic media
and III software. The V-Series machines are the new ones that have the
V-shaped trough.
I know that in order to desensitize magnetic media, you would have to
use the separate Mediacheck 325 desensitizer. This question is not
about that.
I have heard that the V-Series machines, when used with III systems, are
currently unable to distinguish between magnetic and non-magnetic media,
with the result being that all materials receive the full-intensity
desensitization zap at the time of checkout. The result of that would,
of course, be a lot of erased magnetic tapes.
The person who told me this was someone in a position to know, and is
not affiliated with III. This person also told me that there was a fix
for the problem in Release 2006. The staff at III who I have so far
been able to ask about this have not been aware of the issue, but they
are not involved in software engineering.
So, my question is, are any of you out there using the V-Series 3M
machines? Have you heard of this problem, or experienced it yourself?
The person who gave me this information was sincere, but I'm not sure
how reliable the information actually is. We are currently using 3M
Model 7210 machines with no apparent problems.
I would really appreciate a response if you have one, since we're in the
process of ordering some of these new machines. Thanks.
