Our library is still using Innopac. Does anyone know if you can put
active hyperlinks in note or message fields that are viewable by the
public?
Thanks,

On looking at Chapel Hill Public Library's beautifully designed new
catalogue I happened to mispell a keyword search and found myself taken
to a display of part of the keyword index, instead of back to the
Keyword search page with a 'No entries' message showing.
So how do you direct a 'No hits' keyword search result to the keyword
index display instead of to a 'No entries' message?
I have never seen this on any other III catalogue. I feel it is much
better to see where your misspelling fits in with similar words in the
kw index than the No entries message.

Has anyone tried to indicate whether DVDs are full-screen or wide-screen
from the browse screen? If so, how did you manage this? Do you have
problems with patrons requesting a format they don't want because they
didn't look down for enough in the record? We have had a few complaints
about the different formats and I am wondering how I can make this
easier on the patrons and librarians. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

When you are using the old keyword searching (w index), you went to a
display of terms (some of which might not appear to make any sense).
With the Advanced searching, if you have no hits, you are given the no
entries screen. What we have done with INN-Reach is adapt a script to
send the search to the Central Catalog (for us OhioLINK) if no hits are
found --
http://utmost.cl.utoledo.edu/search/X?(asdfasdf)&Da=&Db=&SORT=D
(If this does not work, try http://utmost.cl.utoledo.edu/search/X and
search for baseball55 or anything else that will not show up).
The scripting for it is pretty basic (sounds like something for the
Clearinghouse).
However, there seems to be no reason why you cannot send the search to a
different database (or dare I mention Google/Yahoo) or conduct it as a
different type of search (subject). I have not tried to have this setup
for two links, but that might work as well.
We have a very flexible WebOPAC and this might be worth some more
exploration.
Hope this helps.

Jenny,
The college library member at our consortium had this same problem. It
turned out that the serials module uses some of the same ports as a
peer-to-peer file-sharing application called "SoulSeek". In an effort
to
limit P2P traffic, the IT office was blocking or limiting bandwidth on
those
ports, which prevented the Serials module from opening. I'm not sure of
the
exact port, but once I gave the IT director the list of ports used by
Millennium, he was able to resolve the issue. If you want more details,
feel free to contact me directly.

Hello fellow Innovative users,
We here at UC San Diego are curious to know if anyone out there is
currently using the III Booking module for their Reserves items. While
we have investigated this option over the past few years, we were never
sold on it for this purpose.
Please let me know.

Laura,
I think we've done what you want w/ QVT using their QVTd (server)
application. I helped w/ a presentation on this back in '03, and some
of the specific info. at slide 89+ might help you, from:
http://www.coloradocollege.edu/Library/iug_2003/
(click on powerpoint links half way down page)
other info:
Also as you may know, III has since then implemented (in 2002 phase 3 I
think) direct ftp via a client and the III server, at least for updating
III web files. This is controlled via III network access and web server
file maintenance.
The earlier QVTd direct method had always worked very well for us for
sending large list/print jobs to the "FTS file save" destination, or for
importing patron or bib records. But currently our campus network
configuration causes a wrinkle which I need to further look into: for
us it appears that a client PC and the Server have to be in same logical
zone of our network; with our III server in our firewalled DMZ and my
client PC outside, I can make the connection via qvtd, but the
transmission immediately terminates. I think if I move my PC
temporarily to the DMZ it works fine.
hth,
John

Greetings from Clemson! We're a relatively new III site. After much
confusion and consultation as well as reading documentation, I believe
that
patrons cannot place a recall from the OPAC with no staff intervention.
Am
I correct? I was hoping that our new system would handle this service
but
it appears not. Per library policy, our patrons can place a recall on
any
material checked out on extended loan (longer than two weeks).
Does anybody have a work around? I'm planning to request an
enhancement.

Teri,
Yes, patrons can initiate their own recalls. The procedure is called
"automatic request processing" (ARP). You will find a description of it
in the manual (#101219). Fill out the request worksheet and fax it to
the Help Desk. They will open a call for you and one of the techs will
contact you when they are ready to set it up.
Basically anything is recallable unless you indicate otherwise. For
example we don't allow recalls/holds on Class Reserves, Reference, books
on order, cancelled orders, billed overdues, etc. There are also some
OPAC system options that III should turn on for you when ARP is
instituted (16-23, 32).
We went through about 3 revisions of the ARP requesting "rules" before
we got what we really needed. If anyone at your site takes the Advanced
System Access and Administration training from Innovative they will be
able to get into the request rules table and make modifications. Even
if someone already has taken the training I would let Innovative set up
the rule table the first time around.

We have film & video in a separate scope, so I was able to do a scope-
specific briefcit display for it - see http://roger.ucsd.edu/search~S3
Instead of using the media token, I took the information from the 538
field - the token looks like this: {fieldspec:Vbn538}

Mike,
We've followed the North Shore approach to a temporary solution and are
very pleased with the results. I wanted to thank you for having shared
this with your IUG counterparts. Some in my library would like to buy
you a pizza in appreciation ;-).
In my opinion III is still not off the hook regarding this matter. I've
submitted enhancements both to III directly and to the IUG. I hope other
libraries who use scoping will consider supporting these.
Thanks,
Karl

Hello Innovative Users:
I'm looking for other III sites that have done some work integrating
their III systems and courseware systems for a possible panel
presentation at the next IUG.
If you are already planning a session, or can be talked into
particpating on a panel, please contact me.
Program proposals are due October 10th.
Sincerely,

We went through this about a year ago. It sounds like a firewall
problem, particularly a CISCO PIX issue. See this article on CS Direct
(FAQ) at: http://csdirect.iii.com/faq/firewall.shtml
You may have to use your institutional login to access the article. If
you are unable to access it, send me your fax privately and I will fax
it to you.
You mentioned that your site runs Cisco PIX firewall, well there is a
particular instruction at the lower bottom of the cited FAQ article that
addresses this situation. [I'll email this to you privately].

Subject: Millennium startup (Serials)
I read some postings on this list back in the summer concerning startup
problems on specific PCs. We, too, are having a strange problem. It's
only happening at one library. It doesn't seem to matter which PC at
that site is used, but when they login to Millennium Serials, it tries
to load, but always freezes at "Initializing routing...". It was
working fine for a while and now, this. Of course, IT insists that it
made no changes on the day it stopped working. The site does have a
Cisco PIX firewall, so we are looking into that. We have re-installed
Millennium, emptied the jardir, everything suggested in past posts. We
also have an open call with Innovative. I just wondered if anyone who
has survived this has any other suggestions or workarounds. This is a
law library and they have so many serials and so much work to do.
Thanks, in advance.

Re: Credit cards and Ecommerce, the Iowa City Public Library has
accepted credit cards at the Circulation Desk for several years, and
have two units at which we swipe debit or credit cards. The two units
share one phone line (so both cannot be in use at the same time).
We implemented Ecommerce early this year, and those transactions are
handled separately at our bank and in our own recordkeeping.

I have two questions for everyone:
1) What is the best way to take your staging site to a live site? (I'm
finally going to Mill. Silver)
2) For those of you using ecommerce-how do you handle patrons who want
to use their credit card at the circ. desk? (Do you have a manual
marchine, do you swipe the card, etc.)
Thanks!
