Job Description: General Index Editor

General Index Editor needed to manage and oversee the creation of an electronic
index for Walla Walla newspapers published between 1861 and 1938. This 30 month
grant funded position entails training inmate employees at the Washington State
Penitentiary and overseeing their daily work.

The General Index Editor (GIE) will assist in developing the project and will
manage it on site. The GIE will work with computers and computer software needed
to record the information harvested from newspaper back files; train and
supervise the inmate employees; provide quality control; and maintain the master
database for the project.

In overseeing the indexing project, the GIE will collaborate with the Department
Head for Computer Instruction and the Literacy Instructor for Walla Walla
Community College, North Campus. GIE will report to the Assistant Director of
Education for Walla Walla Community College.

Thirty month grant funded position with possibility of renewal. $4,166.66 per
month with added monetary allowance in lieu of medical and retirement benefits.

Successful candidate must pass background check and complete a paid five week
CORE class for the Washington State Department of Corrections.

New MLIS graduates encouraged to apply.

Requirements
? At least one year of coursework toward an MLIS, Equivalent Degree or Indexing
Experience
? Coursework and/or experience in Indexing and Abstracting
? Supervisory experience
? Coursework or experience in developing and / or working with indexing software
? Ability to bring flexibility and creativity to the workplace
? Relocation to Walla Walla, Washington area and work in Penitentiary
? Ability to independently work on deadlines

Desired:
? MLIS Degree or Equivalent Degree completion
? Indexing and Abstracting coursework/experience with historic newspapers
? Experience working with VB, VBA and/or SQL computer languages
? Cataloging coursework/experience
? Project Management Experience
? Coursework/experience with prisons/prison libraries
? Knowledge or interest in Pacific Northwest history
