This is good advice.
You might also want to unsubscribe or postpone (depending on the
individual list rules) your listserv subscriptions if you are going to
be out-of-office, then re-subscribe/reactivate when you return.

Subject: e-mail reply
When I send a message to the IUG list, I generally get some automated
bounce-backs from people who "will be out of the office until
such-and-such date". It reminded me of an e-mail we got from our I.T.
department about how to fight spam. Here is a part of it:
Never reply to a spam. Many such mails say that "If you don't want
further mails, send a blank reply to this mail". Replying to spam will
just invite more trouble. The spammer's program will confirm that your
e-mail address is active and just spam you even more. Delete such mail
immediately.
Use "Out of Office" message only when you will be gone for an extended
period of time
As mentioned above, replying to a spam email can validate your address
to a spammer and invite more trouble. When you are out of the office
and set your "Out of Office" auto reply, this could potentially validate
your address to a spammer. For this reason, IT recommends using your
"Out of Office" auto reply only for extended absences.
