Serials staff at the Bourne Library (CLAMS Network) would be interested in the answers to this question also--we have been having a discussion regarding the advantages/disadvantages and so far have determined that the only advantage to archiving a card appears to be when one still has an outstanding claim. Would anyone reply to this list rather than off-list,

Thanks,

Hello everyone. I work for a public library and my main job is
processing serials in the Technical Services Dept. I am interested in
learning possible reasons, as well as the advantages & disadvantages, for
archiving serial check-in records. I am gearing up for a session of
archiving cards, but I'm not sure why we archive them. When I asked my
supervisor, she did not know either and suggested I ask this list for more
information. I've been at this job for a little over a year and I am trying
to streamline the process as much as possible. I don't want to make any
changes without a more complete understanding, but I also don't want to do
something just because that's the way it's always been done.
I've searched the archives and saw a similar request for information
in 2002, but responses were directed off list.

Thank you for any information you can provide.
