Another option to consider, if you own the B321 portable barcode reader,
is one that we use regularly. Staff who aren't authorized for
cataloging (or for that matter even circulation) can scan the barcodes
of items to be withdrawn into the portable scanner. The batch of
barcodes can then be loaded into a review file (see manual #102579), and
from there you can use rapid update or global update to change the
status to Withdrawn. (We also suppress the item records when we do
this.) This is a nice efficient method if you're working with a large
number of withdrawals at one time, and it gets around the item record
authorization issue. It would probably not be a very efficient way to
do it if you withdraw items in small numbers at a time.

Subject: withdrawals

Hello...
I'm writing from pre-migration madness at the Thunder Bay Public
Library! We are migrating from GEAC to Millennium 2005 Limited Edition.
We have learned that staff will need to be in the Cataloguing Client in
order to change the status of a large number of items to "withdrawn."
Currently, this job is done by front-line staff, who we would not want
to allow access to all the Catalouging functions. We understand that we
can establish a log-in, with related initials/password that will allow
access to limited functions, as well as pre-defined templates. Will
this built-in security be enough to simply allow folks to mark things
"withdrawn" and not do anything else? I'm curious to know how other
libraries manage this task.
Thanks, in advance.
Joanna
