RE: BISAC, EDIFACT and 13 digit ISBN's

Am I correct in understanding that this is only the ordering portion.
This does not include the part of getting the brief records from the
vendor into Innovative.

Good morning,
At the MacPhaidin Library at Stonehill College, we migrated from BISAC
to EDIFACT in early June 2005. It was a relatively painless process -
from my perspective as the system administrator. Despite the change in
early June, our Acquisitions Department did not actually use the system
until July. As such, we did not change ordering procedures in the
middle of our fiscal year. However, because the change is in the way
orders are transmitted to vendors not in the way that any fiscal matters
are handled, the change should not cause any problems if done during the
fiscal year (i.e. should be a non-issue).
The installation of the product by Innovative was a very quick and easy
procedure. It took me a little over a week and a half to get everything
set up with our vendors. When everything was set up on the vendor end,
I tested the new ordering system with some out of print titles. We did
not encounter any problems on the technical side of things. The bigger
issue was the change in procedure for our Acquisitions department. But,
we have now been ordering with EDIFACT since July 1st without any
problems.

Subject: BISAC, EDIFACT and 13 digit ISBN's
Colleagues --
At CSDirect there is a fact-sheet
http://csdirect.iii.com/faq/isbn13.shtml about the upcoming change on
1/1/07 to the ISBN from 10 digits to 13 digits, and the effect that this
will have on III libraries. One of the fallouts is that the BISAC
interface will no longer work, as BISAC is not moving forward with the
13 digit ISBN.
Am I correct in understanding that as a BISAC library we have three
choices:
- not address the issue and most likely have to go back to mailing paper
orders to vendors for new materials (probably the worst choice) after
1/1/07
- find the funds in this fiscal year to purchase the EDIFACT interface
that will support 13 digit ISBN's
-- or
- wait for FY07 and hope that we can get the purchase for EDIFACT in
next fiscal year's budget.
Are there other options? Is there yet another interface besides these
two?
Has anyone moved from BISAC to EDIFACT while using MilAcq? What was
your experience? Does it create problems if done mid-fiscal year? Or is
the use of both interfaces in the same fiscal year a non-issue?
We appreciate any options and advice that you can give.
Thanks
Paul
