Re: Use create lists to find current serials titles?

Just a bit of late additional advice:

After a while we discovered it's a good idea to suppress but not delete weeded and/or 'unsubscribed' titles and give these a different Scode (in addition to dead and current) so we don't get caught in a loop of repeatedly considering subscribing to a journal we already decided to weed or cancel. Plus it's just generally helpful to know the history of things. We use 'u' for 'unsubscribed' 'cause we already used 'c(ancel)' for 'current.'

P.S. I don't think anyone really answered your original question - which I believe was about identifying titles to add checkin cards to as part of your initial conversion. I'm not familiar with MARC21 Holdings (tho we'll be converting to them soon), but it seems to me that holdings wouldn't necessarily indicate currency, only what NLM thinks they have. Although there are elements of the MARC record that indicate currency, it's my experience that the records aren't maintained well enough to count on that info being up to date. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, we simply slogged alphabetically through our Cardex, coding and creating checkin cards and records for each title. Good luck!

Kristyn,

Set up one of your Scodes for either an alive or dead status. This will make short work of
collapsing checkin boxes later when you don't need them or when you need to run a report. Our
periodicals reside permanently in two create list files (alive and dead) because we use them
frequently for a myriad of reporting and control purposes.
