Here is the URL for the page on our Library's website that talks about
patrons replacing lost books.

http://www.calstatela.edu/library/bookreplacement.htm

If the replacement is accepted, the bill is reduced by the replacement cost.
The patron will still owe the late fees ($10) and processing fee ($10).
What the document does not cover is that we add a note to the patron record
about the title and we add a note to the new item record that it was a
patron-provided replacement. We do not waive the total bill except on a
case by case basis.

Subject: Crediting patrons for replacement items

Do any libraries out there allow patrons to bring in replacement items in
lieu of paying the replacement cost for lost items? If you do, I'd like to
know how you handle "crediting" the patron's account.
We do this, primarily with children's board books or paperback items.
Our circ staff would like to do something other than pay or waive the fine,
some how distinguish replacements from other categories.
Their suggested approach would be to adjust the fine to $0.00, which is
currently not possible. Even if it were, I don't think it is really a good
idea, system-wise, because then you'd have a bunch of no-value fines hanging
out there. However, I don't have a better solution. I'm hoping someone out
there will.
Thanks for any suggestions.
