When I was using WAM at another institution we did use scripts to determine the users ip
address and write the url for eresources as either a proxy address for off-campus users or
a direct url for on campus users. But I also tested performance running on-campus users
through the wam proxy server. I didn't notice any measurable difference. So from a statistics
point of view it might be easier to proxy all url's. Of course if there are a lot of public domain
resources then it does require the extra steps of adding those resources to the proxy tables.

I'm wondering though how prevalent Jonathon's concern is - to split
on-campus users away from the WAM proxy server. For one thing,
statistics would be skewed.

The other issue would be if the WAM (and library) server is strong
enough to handle both on/off-campus access without noticeable
slow-downs. Any assessments on that from WAM proxy users?

You shouldn't need a script to avoid having 2 separate links for on vs.
off-campus users. You would just need to use Service Levels in WAM and
assign Service Levels to web logins based on IP address. This is fairly
simple to set up.

You would be able to use the same link for on-campus users they would
just
not be asked for authentication when they clicked on the link and would
be
sent directly to the resource.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more info.

Subject: Script for WAM Proxy access

At my library, we're using Innovative's WAM proxy to authenticate off
campus users of our database subscriptions and we're maintaining two
separate links for on-campus and off-campus users. We'd like to get
away from having separate links and make this process invisible to the
user.

I've seen some libraries that use a script to determine if a user is on
or off campus (via I.P. address) and then send the off campus user to an
appropriate link through the proxy server, so they can be verified as an
authorized user.

I'm fairly new when it comes to server side scripting and would like to
avoid re-inventing the wheel. Does anyone have a script they can share
or point me toward? Unfortunately PHP is not installed on our campus
servers, so I would need something an ASP or a CGI Script.
