LIBRARIAN OF GRINNELL COLLEGE

Grinnell College invites applications and nominations
for the position of Librarian of the College. The
College seeks an energetic, creative leader with a
passion for service and a clear vision of the
library?s central mission in supporting teaching,
learning, and research at a liberal arts college. The
Librarian provides leadership for all library
operations including budget, personnel, and
facilities; contributes to outreach and fund-raising
initiatives; strengthens the College's Special
Collections and Archives; formulates and articulates
the vision and strategic goals of the libraries; and
represents the needs and interests of the Grinnell
College Libraries to the college and general library
community. The Librarian reports to the Vice-President
for Academic Affairs/Dean of the College and holds a
faculty position. Grinnell College offers a salary
commensurate with responsibility and experience and an
excellent benefits package. Anticipated starting date
is Summer 2006.

The Librarian of the College manages a budget of $2.9
million (including $1.3 million for collections);
leads a staff of 7 library faculty, 1 administrative
assistant, 14 FTE support staff, and over 325 hours
per week of student assistants; and oversees four
physical facilities: Burling Library, Windsor Science
Library, the Curriculum Library, and a
state-of-the-art storage facility completed in 2005.
Construction of a new Science Library began in June
2005, and a master plan is being developed for a
renovation and addition to Burling Library. The
Libraries are highly regarded on campus and work in
close cooperation with Information Technology Services
(including the Curricular Technology Specialists and
the Audio-Visual Center) and the Print and Drawing
Study Room of the Faulconer Gallery. The Libraries?
collections include 523,000 volumes, 5162 print and
online journals, and online access to a diverse
selection of electronic resources. Special Collections
documents the history of Grinnell College and its
cultural and natural surroundings in Iowa. Grinnell

Qualifications:

? A comprehensive understanding of the
mission of libraries in the liberal arts college and
the ability to articulate that mission to others

? Demonstrated ability to be a visionary,
creative, and innovative leader

? Demonstrated administrative and management
experience in academic libraries including budgeting

? A record of service to the profession and
evidence of ongoing scholarly achievement

? Ability to work successfully within a
collaborative and collegial environment and foster
this ability in others

? Ability to assess information resources
and technological applications that support and
enhance library services, instruction, and research

? Knowledge of current issues and trends in
scholarly communication including copyright and
licensing

? Excellent communication and interpersonal
skills

? Respect for all members of a diverse
academic community and strong personal integrity

? ALA-accredited MLS or international
equivalent

Qualifications, Desired:

? Experience with local, regional or
national collaborations for resource sharing

? Teaching and mentoring experience
