Hi, Steve:
I am sure you may be overwhelmed with responses! But here's mine
anyway.
Within indexing rules, your institution has made choices about each
MARC tag or tag group (e.g. 500-599) that is included in
indexing. KEEP means index the subfields that are listed. (The
listed subfields do not have commas between them.) KEEP ALL
means index the entire field. REM means remove the following
subfields and THEN index the field.
For your example "REM 6w" the meaning is remove subfield 6 and
subfield w before indexing.
Whether you see "KEEP" or "REM" depends upon the easiest
expression of the number of subfields involved. So if you wanted
all subfields indexed except one, you would see "REM" but if you
wanted to index only two subfields out of many you see "KEEP"
with those 2 subfields listed.
As for "EACH t" I would expect this to apply to an enhanced
contents note (505 field) for example, and it means index each
subfield t separately, for indiviual title access.
I hope this helps to understand the "system." If you need to
review the list with the MARC formats in hand, and you find you
need to make changes, Innovative can help you. We (individual
sites) do not maintain our indexing tables. We can just look at
them. Just remember that asking for changes may mean you need to
reindex something, and that can be costly.
