Although we use "custom" Material Types for our various media types,
technically breaking MARC rules, we do so in order to make the most
effective use of the media icons in the OPAC as well as provide an easy way
for patrons to limit searches by format. Catalogers replace the MARC Mat
Type for sound recordings and video recordings with a local Mat Type before
exporting records from OCLC. They don't seem to find this too cumbersome,
and we can do periodic checks on the database by using create lists and
rapid update to change any which get missed during cataloging.

As for having problems down the road if we have to migrate our data to
another system, we can easily rapid update the custom Mat Types back to the
MARC standard before extracting data.
