Hello, all:

Here at C/W MARS we use many distinctive format codes that
display in the media column in WebPAC. We accomplish this
without making any changes to the MARC coding that is necessary
for record integrity. Instead, we use the Innovative fixed-field
"format" code that we populate with rapid update of records that
meet certain criteria. We sweep through the new records added to
the database at least once a week if not more often.

For example, we do a review file of records with MARC format
code "g" (leader byte 06) and look for the following:
description has "videodisc" with dimensions "4 3/4 in." ; or,
description contains "videocassette" and dimensions "1/2 in." By
these review files and rapid updates we identify VHS videos, DVD
videos, and similar methodology identifies large print, spoken
cassettes, spoken CD, musical cassettes, musical CDs, online
resources, etc. We just had Innovative create a "format" list
that included all the terms we wanted to include. We use our
saved searches to keep from having to remember all the steps to
include each time for each format.

We also protect the "format" field so that record overlays do
not change the format code back to the MARC generics.

This has saved the patrons untold distress and frustratioin at
getting the wrong format when placing holds.

We could discuss this in depth with anyone who is interested.
Just let me know.

Thanks.
