Extra work for catalogers wouldn't be the only issue if you don't use
MARC-defined codes where required. Also at issue is compatibility with
other systems and possible problems if you sometime migrate to another
system.

That being said, this differentiation may be accomplished by using some
of the Innovative-specific codes, rather than MARC codes. Perhaps
someone has details on how to do this.

Hello. We've seen some libraries are able to have two different media
icons in their webopac for DVDs versus VHS videos. But we've been told
that the icons are tied to the material type field, which is tied to an
officially defined MARC fixed-field tag which doesn't distinguish
different kinds of videos.

So how is this being done?

Does the solution involve the catalogers having to break official MARC
rules, or manually add an extra value somewhere to all records or
something like that? We really want to do this, but the catalogers
really don't want the solution to create extra work for them on a
per-record basis.

Any advice, examples, tips, etc. would be greatly appreciated!
