We assign an ICODE1 value for each month and when the time comes
for that new book to be relocated into the regular collection I run
a Create List based on ICODE1 month value and Location Code. WIth
the items on this list I then make the necessary changes to the ICODE1,
Location Code and any other field. All can be done in Rapid Update off
the Create List file.

Subject: New books in transit to stacks

Our library routes all newly cataloged books to a "new book" shelf in the
library lobby for patrons to browse. The books stay in the lobby for a
week and then are sent to the appropriate floor to be shelved in the
stacks. We plan to assign a location code to the books that will designate
what floor they are on, to make it easier for the patrons to find them (LC
Classes A-D 2nd floor, E-G on 3rd floor, etc.). However, if we assign the
floor location code in cataloging and the books are actually in the lobby,
we will confuse the patrons searching the catalog.

We are coming up on Millennium 2005 next month, and we are looking at
features such as "Time to reshelve and item table" (Page #105411 of
Millennium Guide) and "Automated clearing of in transit status" (Page
#105199 of Millennium guide) to help us set up the work flow for tracking
the location of these new books. It may be that we will have to assign a
location code for the new books shelf and manually change all the locations
when the books come off the shelf to go upstairs.

We are hoping that another library that has a similar set up may already
have devised an efficient work flow for this scenario, and might be willing
to share specifications with us. Thanks in advance for any assistance or
ideas you can provide!
