Exactly, Gene! That is why I don't understand why a record with a
language code of ger, a 245 second indicator of 4 and a skip character
in III of 4 cannot be searched as Die Hattisch, but must be searched as
Hattisch. Not only does III not just skip the Die and go merrily over
to hattisch, Die hattisch doesn't even show up in the list of retrieved
records! Only those German titles that actually start with An die show
up, because III is reading An as an article instead of a preposition. I
can understand that (without liking it much), but I can't understand why
III can't just accept the 245 second indicator and the skip character as
correct.

Just saw the most recent post on this. First of all, 246s should never
start with an initial article since there is no skip character indicator
in
the field. Also any |t should never start with an initial article, per
AACR2/LCRI.

Also, as I understand it, the "skip" field in the III record is
generated by
the skip indicator preceding the 245 field.
