I am having good luck with the Symbol 9208 for our circ desk and with
the Symbol 2208 for our departments.
The 9208 is an Omnidirectional projection scanner that uses projects a
grid pattern. We have found that at the circ desk that not having to
line up the laser with the barcode has sped up our checkout process. We
also like the fact that it is easy to turn off or on what barcode
formats that it will read. At our circ desk, we turn off everything but
codabar with notis editing, while in tech services, we also have upc
enabled.
The 2208 used in the departments is a single laser line scanner. It can
be used hand held with the trigger or left in the stand for triggerless
operation.
I purchase them from CDWG and the 9208 is around $278 and the 2208 is
about $160 for beige and $170 for black. They come with a 5 year
warranty compared to the Voyagers 2 year warranty.
I have switched from the Metrologic Voyager scanners because I was
having too many failures of them when used with USB cables and they
were out of warranty.

We've been using the old barcode wands since time began. Anybody have some desktop scanners to recommend?
