Our IT staff has a secure location in another building on campus. Each
day, IT staff walks the latest tape to that location and brings back the
oldest tape to their area. Both areas have limited access and are
controlled by access codes.

Subject: Security and offsite backups
We send our tape backups offsite to a branch to be stored in a fire safe
in case the main library is destroyed by a fire. This is a casual
exchange through our regular delivery. We did not want to enter into a
formal transfer and storage service due to the cost involved.
A question about the security of our patron data has come up,
especially in light of having to notify all of our customers if we
compromise their information (now a law in California), and the fact
that the data is not encrypted. Not to mention the problems that could
arise if one of our tapes was lost in delivery, and the data used for
no good.
Does anyone know if Innovative plans to encrypt the data?
Can you please let me know how you protect yourself from disaster as
well as protecting your data from being compromised?
Thanks,
Karen
