Subject: MARCIVE Records
We're about to start the regular loading of MARCIVE records for
government documents, and I'd like to hear how other Innovative sites
handle their MARCIVE records. Some of the specific points I'm concerned
about are:
--Do you load any form of dummy item records with the records, so that
location and call number information will display in the catalog? (And
also, perhaps, to make sure the MARCIVE records don't get swept up in
any purges of bib records with no item/order/checkout records
attached...)
Yes we create an item record as part of the load.
--Do you "flag" the MARCIVE records in any way so that you know they
were loaded from MARCIVE?
no
--How do you handle the weeding of MARCIVE records? My understanding of
what our Gov Docs folks want to do is keep some portion of the materials
in the permanent collection, and discard the others after five years. Is
this similar to what other sites are doing, and, if so, what do you do
after five years or so to get the MARCIVE records out of the system?
I am just the systems person, so I cannot speak to that directly. I do
know that our Gov Docs librarian keeps on top of his collection and
deletes items as they are purged from our collection.
There are probably many other questions, but those are the ones I'm most
worried about at the moment. Many thanks for any help!
