Jeff,
I've put together a document on our website for our member libraries to
read before they decide to start in on one of these projects. It's an
overview, sections of which I've pasted below. We are a large network
consortium, so our set up is probably somewhat different than yours.
But the principles are essentially the same when it comes to Innovative
inventory:
"Inventory control reports through Innovative Interfaces software are
now available to interested C/WMARS libraries. In general what this
program can do is take sections of an institution's collection that have
been manually scanned into a hand-held data collection device and
run comparative reports based upon an expected call # range of items.
How this works is that the software initially looks at the first and last
items in a given set of scanned data, formulates a shelf list of what
items should fall within this range based upon the shelving location and
call #'s of the first and last items, then compares this formulated
"expected" shelf list with the actual list of items that are physically
scanned.
In this way inventory reports run by C/WMARS staff off of library-
uploaded sets of inventoried barcode lists may accurately highlight
items that are found where they are expected to be found on a library's
physical shelf. Perhaps more importantly, however, these lists can also
point out such discrepancies as missing, mis-shelved, and/or checked
out items as well as scanned barcodes that have not yet been
cataloged with C/WMARS. In addition items with shelving location
codes seemingly out of synch with the rest of the shelf list are also
flagged for possible inspection by library staff."
Hope this helps to give you a better sense as to how the module can
possibly work for you.
