Karen - I don't have the answer regarding a setting delaying the trapping,
but what is the difference in terms of service? Someone placed a hold,
another came & found it to check out - there is still a hold on it whether
or not the system blocks checkout. Our circulation policy is we override
the hold and let the guest who is there with it in his/her hand check it
out, remind them they won't be able to renew it. We process the pick list
every morning before we open and still this occurs a few times a week
obviously because holds are placed continuously throughout the day.

Subject: Delay before paging?
We have a dilemma I would like some input on. If a customer comes to the
desk to check out an item, and the item they have in their possession
is trapped for a hold, we honor the hold and inform the customer that we
can place a future hold for them. This doesn't happen often, except for
a few "Hot" collections. Here are our observations/steps: 1. Paging
slips are printed and processed in the morning prior to opening. 2. The
customer comes into the branch and retrieves the item from the shelf.
3.Circulation is rejected because a hold has been placed via the OAPC.
This seems unfair to send the customer that made the effort to come
into the branch away empty handed, however, the patron who placed the
hold via the web knows the item shows available with no outstanding
holds.
I did find in the manual that "Holds on items not checked out
immediately reserve the item." Is there a setting somewhere that delays
the trapping of an item for a library determined time?
thanks,
Karen
