Several years ago we did a setup for use studies of current periodical
issues.

We placed a barcode on the shelf label for a title [these are movable labels
that clip on the end of the shelf]. We used the double barcode format; the
number only portion of the barcode was placed next to the title on a
printout. We then entered the barcode in the item record for the title. We
use a single item record for the entire title. After the labeling was done,
we got a new printout with the barcode included to check against the labeled
shelves.

We have Person portable scanners from III. When issues are being reshelved,
the shelver scans the barcode equal to the number of issues. That is, if
three issues of a title are being shelved, the barcode for that title is
scanned three times.

The Percon file is then downloaded to a PC with III-supplied software. From
the circ system you then import the count into the main database. Our count
goes into a fixed field in the item record called INTL USE.

We clear the counts at the end of each fiscal year.

During the year, the data is downloaded from the III system into an Excel
spreadsheet, usually on a quarterly basis.

Subject: Use Studies

Greetings from Clemson! We're a "soon to be" III site. I have a question
about use studies. How do you conduct use studies on current issues of
periodicals? Must each issue be barcoded? Any suggestions?

We're a NOTIS site and currently have heavy-duty notebooks loaded up with
pages of barcodes linked to "dummy" records for this purpose. It's
cumbersome & I hope to find another way to conduct the studies so that
students don't have to sit with notebooks and turn pages and zap barcodes.
