Aimee:

We began having serious problems of this sort about two weeks ago.

Our initial problem was that we were getting occurrences where patrons would
not get a receipt after checkout. 3M did a lot of troubleshooting, and
ended up installing some software patches.

As soon as they installed the first patches (to address the printing
problem) the error messages began appearing. A couple of days later, when
they figured out a fix, the problem immediately went away.

Our machines would stall in the middle of a group of checkouts and return
the flying book icon with the "go to circ desk" message. At the circ desk
the items were found to be on loan as intended.

What 3M told me was that they changed the barcode specifications on our
machines, tightening them down to accept only 14-digit Codabar, which is,
after all, the only type of barcode we use. They said the error log files
were showing a lot of barcode errors. (This doesn't make much sense to me,
because the problem started all of a sudden after years of heavy,
trouble-free use.)

So there may have been more to it than that, but the important thing is that
the problem got solved. I would suggest that you call 3M and/or track down
our excellent local tech support specialist. (I don't want to name him
here, but you know who he is. If not, give me a call.) Clay.

Subject: 3m Self Check -- items not checking out

I did not see any posted resolutions to the following problem described back
in Feb:

"With the second machine, we managed to check out her first 3 books okay,
then the machine indicated a problem with the fourth book (nothing very
descriptive, mind you, just "bring it to the desk"). So, I go to check the
item out to the patron using a Millennium session, and there's nothing wrong
with the book at all. This happens a *lot*."

We have been having the same problem with our machines. Is anyone else?
Are there any resolutions out there?
