If what you say is accurate, that the book wasn't on hold for someone else,
it was checked in properly, wan't in transit etc. and that you were able to
check it out in milcirc, I suspect the scanner might be weak, or the scanner
lens may be dirty. If the scanner is weak and you have a service agreement
w/3M, call for service. But first, cleaning the lens is simple enough: Use a
very soft cloth so you don't scratch the lens. Don't look directly into the
scanner. Apply the cleaner to the rag first, don't spray the lens. Keep a
spray bottle of cleaner [like 409, Simple Green etc.] and a clean rag handy
and next time when you come upon a book that won't check out as in the
situation you described, lightly clean the barcode, then scan it again on
the self-check. I also find that professionally printed barcodes work better
and last longer than the replacement barcodes we make with our Zebra barcode
duplicator. The latter tend to scuff and wear which affects the ability of
the scanner to read the label. If you make replacement labels notice if that
applies to the items the 3M won't read. Also,we use two barcodes per item,
the second is on the verso of the title page. I taught my staff to use that
as a fall-back when assisting on the self-ck if the label on the cover
doesn't scan properly.

Subject: 3m Self Check -- items not checking out

I did not see any posted resolutions to the following problem described back
in Feb:

"With the second machine, we managed to check out her first 3 books okay,
then the machine indicated a problem with the fourth book (nothing very
descriptive, mind you, just "bring it to the desk"). So, I go to check the
item out to the patron using a Millennium session, and there's nothing wrong
with the book at all. This happens a *lot*."

We have been having the same problem with our machines. Is anyone else?
Are there any resolutions out there?
