I didn't see the original, but given where the sender is from, a lot
will have to do if you are scanning for internal, curator types or
external people.
If you are scanning for an internal person who really cares about the
image, then you might want to invest in a good scanner & software. If
you aren't overly concerned with image quality, a cheaper scanner can do.
If you want to mail people PDFs, you should buy a full copy of Adobe
Acrobat - it can be really useful for minimizing the size of scanned
files, including high-quality images. UCSD uses Acrobat for ILL and
digital reserves units.

Since PCC has three campuses, several centers and many distance learning
students, I have been using the Ariel option to "scan and save" copies
into the "Patron Delivery" server. The end user gets a PDF (or tiff)
file , notify the patron and no paper. The quality of the image is
dependant on the scanner, but the skill of the operator can minimize
many problems.

Our library is using 3 "planetary" (overhead) scanners to photocopy
printed materials for patrons. We are looking at ways to reduce waste
of paper and toner ink (which is in part due to mediocre quality of
copies).
We want to replace paper copying with digital scanning and forwarding
of scanned documents to users. We are ready to look at any solution,
including, but not limited to, portable scanners.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
