Carol,

Do you then not print the location on the spine label and instead rely
upon the color coding solely?

My reply is in regard to using color for coding locations, but with tape

rather than color within the spine label itself.

At Carleton, we used colored tape at the top or bottom of spine labels
for
materials in certain temporary or changing collections -- Current
Reading
Room, Faculty Publications, Ready Reference, Reserves. When particular
volumes are moved to a different collection, it is easy to remove the
tape,
change the location and send it to new location -- no need to make a new

spine label. This has really speeded up the collection transfer process

for us.

We use Gaylord Bookcraft Tape, 6 mil vinyl, 1/2 inch wide. Comes in 13
dazzling colors! We apply the tape over the label protector that we use

over most spine labels. The tape stays put, but also peels off easily
without leaving a residue. For us, this works better than the little
pre-printed labels with wording (which often don't stay put.)
